now that I have my Min commando (both AoD and AV) and min logi fits where I wanted them, I am thinking I will branch out into scouts. It's a toss up between Gal or Min. I'm going to post more on that dilemma in another thread this week, but figure that understanding how nova knifing works is important to making that decision and worthy of a topic of its own.
How does damage work with nova knives?
my dual tanked adv min logi (around 700 HP if I remember correctly) gets OHK'ed by adv or proto knives. When I looked at the damage in the market, adv are 150 damage and proto are 200 damage. Prof 5 in knives and level 5 in min scout would only give 50% more damage (less if there is a stacking penalty) and the max number of high slots is 3, so even 3 complex damage modes added to that is still under 75% more damage which would mean the proto would do 350 damage. Something isn't adding up here. Does the charge time increase the damage?
Speaking of charge time, can you use them before the charge time is done or do you need to fully charge them before they can fire?
What is the damage profile for knives? I noticed the proficiency bonus does not favor one particular type of HP like all the other weapons do.
How hard are they to get used to? (I don't want to sink a boatload of SP into knives and suites to find out it is difficult to learn to some level of effectiveness let alone master)
How important are damage mods? I want some ewar (Precision enhancers) and shield extenders seem like a good idea. Do I need damage mods to OHK medium suites? Heavies?
Would running with REs in addition to knives be a good/necessary tactic?
Thanks in advance for any feedback/help. |

Awesome info.
I assume you hold R1 to do the charge. Any indication of when it is fully charged? Can you hold the charge indefinitely? I assume you can move while charged, but not run. |

The MN hits much harder, but requires damps in 2 of its 3 lows (and still can't beat all scans unless proto cloaked). You can get better speed, dampening and scan precision out of GA, though these perks come with added risk when dealing with high-HP heavies. The odds of a fatty instaspinning and instasplatting you after being shanked are much higher with GA.
In a nutshell, Ganja NK builds are likely superior against non-Heavies, but when hunting big game you're better off with the Minja. Both builds are a blast; you're in for alot of fun either way.
I did the math on passive scanners (thanks to whoever posted the spreadsheet in another thread!) and didn't find the Gal scout that attractive since the bonuses equate to a basic module benefit and I found that one damping module would let me avoid any passive scanners except a uber PE stacked cal scout or a proto skilled amar scout (but how many amarr scouts are there). I haven't done the math on active scanners though.
Gal scouts are also significantly slower than a Min scout and the speed must be an advantage for knifing. The big plus of the Gal scout for me is the extra low slot, but since I want really fast hacking, I would use one of those for a complex code breaker module. It's still a toss up for me. I need to do more poking around. At this point, I am trying to figure out if knifing is even the way to go. Because if I don't want to knife, I might as well go GAL.

I'd recommend putting a little SP into advanced knives and trying them out on your logi suit. Just build it like a scout if you can, dampeners, kincats and the like. If you really enjoy the knives but find they're not doing enough damage for your tastes, go Minmatar. If you think you're ending up on passives too often, go Gallente, which is certainly the far superior scout and quite a bit more flexible.
I'm lvl 5 in shields, biotics, armor, eng, elect, and kin. Only 3 in the ewar skils. Figured I'd need at least adv modules to test run this.
running just knives on a logi suit sounds frightening. I am lvl 3 min assault, but I guess running lofi would force me to use only my knives (and the ewar is better on logi than an assault).
